Brokeback Mountain

The short story of broke back mountain seemed to leave out a lot of detail compared to the movie we watched in class. I have seem the movie before and I feel like it contained a lot more information than the short story. The movie seemed to stem from a novel instead of the short story we read. When we discussed the differences in class everyone seemed to feel the same way.

movie!

The recent movie that we watched was different. It was interesting to watch but kind of disturbing. The women was on the phone talking about sex with different men, in front of her husband and her children. Everyone in the movie was weird in their own ways and it made it kind of hard to follow. However, I did like how each separate family or person was tied together somehow. I was VERY confused at the end where the man snapped and killed the young woman they found on the bike trail. I don't know if we missed some clips of the movie in between each day of watching it but something did not seem to mesh very well. Over all it was an interesting movie but some parts became very confusing. I understand that the writer put ideas from his life into each of his stories so he must have been a disturbed individual to have a life involving all of these circumstances.

Short Stories

I read The Queen Bee by The Brothers Grimm, Regret by Kate Chopin, and Lucas Beauchamp by William Faulkner. Each story was completely different in the ways that they were set up. The Queen Bee was a fairy tale that was very detailed and had far fetched ideas what children would like. It talked about the journey a few men had in finding their wives. They had a mission to find the best one and went through all of these activities such talking with animals to do it. In the end the best man who was the kindest got help from the animals in the story and got the prize of the best wife.
Regret was a very serious drama. It was a very old story and used wording that showed it. This made it somewhat hard to follow in places but you still got the main idea. This story was about a lady who was seen as a hard working person who did everything for herself and by herself. She ends up having to watch her neighbors children while they are away and becomes attached to them and realize that she is not as stone like as she may have thought. She had feelings and could love someone other than her dog.
Lucas Beauchamp was a story of children who grew up being told what to do and end then end became men who were free to make the decisions they wanted to knowing that they knew all of the lessons life had to offer. It was a bit hard to follow and had many, many characters but it was a very plain story in the idea that it did not have much drama or suspense.

Tomorrow

As with all of the short stories lately, I was confused by it. It had many different names of different characters and it made it hard to follow. I like the setting of the story. It seemed to take place long ago and it showed characteristics of the people in it that were very unique to them and the era they were in, such as the grandfather going home for lunch and then a nap afterward and that usually nothing could effect this routine but the trial did. Stuff such as that helped to show the importance of situations in the story, however, I found it hard to follow and I hope that the movie will once again, clear things up.

Memento Movie!

I thought that the movie was really good. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. At first I had was not sure about it, I thought it would be just another movie like all movies we watch in many class, boring and a waste of time.
It was different from the story but it helped me to understand the story better. When I read the story I was really confused. I didn't know if the character was writing to himself or if someone else was writing to him? The movie cleared it all up and the story began to make a lot more sense.
I loved how the movie kept going back in the time line and sometimes repeated a little of what had previously happened. It was creative on the directors part and it was interesting the watch. It kept your attention because you were always wondering how everything would tie together.
However, I did not like the ending. Apparently I am a straight forward type of person who is savvy enough to pick up on all of the twist and turns. I though I knew what was going on, Lenard new Teddy was the killer, for the most part, and was working up to killing him by putting together the clues he needed to verify it. In the end it seemed to me that the character was unsure of what he was supposed to be doing. It showed the scene where he was acting as Sammy Jenkis and might have killed his wife, accidentally, due to the insulin injections. I guess in my mind it played out differently and I defiantly was not a fan of that idea. It ruined my idea of the love story and the husband looking for closure and revenge on a man whole ruined his life by taking what he loved most away from him.

Memento Mori

I found this story very hard to predict. At first I thought the story would go on for awhile, building up a foundation, and then explain what happened. Maybe the character got into a car accident with his wife and she died but he was injured severally to where he has trouble with short term memory. As the story went on it changed what I had recently thought might be happening. My new thoughts were that someone killed his wife and was out to get him and that some person was leaving these notes for him so that he would realize what happened and maybe snap out of out everything and put it all together again. However, the story ended and I am still unsure of what exactly the author was trying to portray. Was the male character writing the letters to himself? Was it a friend of his? Is it me, am I the only one in the whole class who may not have completely followed this storyline?

"The Killer" From Page to Screen...

The essay review is very informal. First it states the story and what happens, then follows up with the films made of the story and the differences and similarities of each. I find it interesting how each film is titled "The Killers" but they are so different. Many of the directors seemed to take one aspect of the story and put it into their films instead of making the film an exact portrayal of the story.
Most of the films have the same ending, the man they are searching for does not fight back and willing accepts that he is going to die. All of the films also include two characters that are searching for the man to be killed however, the ways in which these two people act in the films differs for each.
Personally, I prefer films to match the story as closely as possible. Nothing is more annoying than reading a book, loving the storyline and then going to see the movie and it is nothing like the book you fell in love with. Changing some small details is okay but not the entire story.
Out of the movies we watched in class on Thursday morning, I prefer the first one. I seemed to fit the story better all around. The time in which it took place seemed to sit well. You could also follow along in your head because you were familiar with each character and what came next. Although some of the scenes were extremely corny, such as the shooting in the end where Anderson was shot and the flashes of light did not match with the timing of the gun shots, I still think it was the best.
